M-Hero — Dongfeng's high-end off-road marque, drawing on its Warrior military lineage — launched the 917 in 2023 as China's answer to the electrified G-Wagen moment: a boxy luxury 4x4 in pure-electric and range-extended forms, quad-motor versions claiming over 1,000 horsepower, with crab-walk, tank-turn and dramatic approach angles as standard conversation pieces. Pricing entered Mercedes territory; styling split opinion with intent. It joined Yangwang's U8 in defining a suddenly real segment — the Chinese ultra-off-roader — where domestic technology stacks outgunned legacy prestige. The 917's statement was generational: Dongfeng, builder of the army's vehicles, claiming the civilian summit its heritage implied. The G-Wagen took forty years to become fashionable; the 917 skipped the apprenticeship entirely.
