Origins

Announced in 2017 and delivered from 2022, the One did what engineers had called impossible: it put Mercedes' actual Formula 1 power unit — the 1.6-litre turbo-hybrid V6 with its 11,000 rpm ceiling and four electric motors — into a road car, emissions-legal and idle-capable, at a combined 1,063 horsepower. The five-year delay measured the difficulty; teaching a race engine to start warm from a valet's hand nearly broke the programme. All 275 cars sold at around 2.7 million dollars before the first was built. Vindication came at the Nürburgring: 6:35 in 2022, then 6:29 in 2024 — production-car records that silenced the doubters. The One remains the only true F1-engined road car of its era, and likely of any.
