Origins

The GT 4-Door Coupé of 2018 gave Mercedes-AMG's standalone sports-car line a practical flagship: a swooping five-door built on adapted E-Class architecture but sold as the GT family's grand tourer, topped by the 63 S's 4-litre biturbo V8 at 639 horsepower — 0–100 in the low threes with boot space for the school run. Below it, six-cylinder hybrid versions broadened the range. It answered the Panamera directly and gave AMG's customers continuity — the marque's own silhouette rather than a badged saloon. Later E Performance hybrids pushed past 840 horsepower. The car's role exceeds its numbers: it marked Affalterbach's graduation from engine supplier and tuner to full-line manufacturer, with a family car bearing no Mercedes model's name but its own.
