Brand History
The Mercedes-AMG Story
AMG was founded in 1967 by former Mercedes engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, the name combining their initials with Grossaspach, Aufrecht's birthplace. The tuning firm made its name in touring car racing, famously with the 300 SEL 6.8 'Red Pig' that finished second at Spa in 1971, and progressively grew closer to Mercedes-Benz until Daimler took control, completing the acquisition in 2005. AMG is now the official high-performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, following a 'one man, one engine' hand-building philosophy for many of its engines.
