Origins
The Oltcit Club of 1981 emerged from an improbable treaty: Citroën and Ceaușescu's Romania jointly built a factory at Craiova to produce a small hatchback — Citroën's shelved Y-project — with the French firm's flat-twin and flat-four engines, sold westward as the Citroën Axel to offset the deal's hard currency. Romanian build quality met French design intricacy with predictable friction; export Axels struggled against Citroën's own range, and domestic Clubs served a market grateful for anything with wheels. Around 200,000 were built before the partnership dissolved post-revolution, the plant passing eventually to Daewoo and later Ford. The Club remains the oddest badge in Citroën's orbit — a boxer-engined Romanian, born of geopolitics, orphaned by history twice.
