01

Origins

The Town Car began as a trim level on the Lincoln Continental and became a model in its own right for 1981, sitting on Ford's Panther platform: a full-size body bolted to a separate steel frame, with a V8 up front and drive to the rear. That architecture was already old-fashioned when the car launched, and it was still in production thirty years later, largely unchanged in principle.

Design and engineering

What kept it alive was fitness for purpose. It rode softly, seated six, had a boot that swallowed luggage, and could be repaired anywhere in North America with common parts. A comprehensive restyle for 1990 rounded off the shape and won Motor Trend's Car of the Year award, but the substance was the same. Fleet and livery operators bought them in enormous numbers, and coachbuilders stretched them into limousines because the frame made it straightforward.

In production

Retail sales dwindled as buyers moved to SUVs and the customer base aged, but commercial demand held on long past the point where a modern manufacturer would normally have quit. The last Town Car was built at the Wixom plant in Michigan in 2011, and the plant closed with it. Lincoln has not built anything remotely like it since.
