Origins

The Good Cat is the car that took Great Wall's electric brand abroad. Launched in China in 2020, it is a compact five-door hatchback on a dedicated electric platform, with a front motor and single-speed drive, and it is defined by Emanuel Derta's styling: round headlamps, a sloping bonnet and a tail that draw openly on European sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s. Opinions on the look divide sharply, which has not hurt sales.

Design and engineering

Great Wall put it into production at Rayong in Thailand and later in Indonesia, and exported it to Europe, Israel, Latin America and the United Kingdom, where it was sold under other names. For several markets it was the first Chinese electric car many buyers had seen in a showroom, which gave it a significance beyond its numbers.

In production

It was not a trouble-free launch. Chinese owners took issue publicly in 2022 over the specification of the infotainment hardware they had been sold, and the company ended up offering compensation, an early example of the scrutiny domestic buyers now apply to electric vehicle claims.
