Origins

Qoros launched in 2013 as China's most internationally ambitious startup: a Chery-Israeli joint venture with ex-BMW leadership, European engineering centres, and the 3 — a compact saloon that promptly scored the highest Euro NCAP result of its year, the first Chinese car to achieve five stars and a genuine industrial milestone. The engineering was real; the business never followed. Priced against joint-venture incumbents without their badge equity, distributed thinly, the 3 sold in fractions of its plans in China while European entry stalled. Qoros became the industry's cautionary case study — proof that world-class product, unaccompanied by brand and channel, converts to nothing — and its NCAP certificate remains the era's most expensive diploma. The diploma hangs, metaphorically, in every Chinese five-star lobby that followed.
