Origins

Launched in May 1991, the Toledo was the proof that the Volkswagen takeover had produced something. It used Golf-derived underpinnings and Volkswagen engines, was assembled to standards SEAT had not previously managed, and replaced the elderly Malaga at the top of the range.

Design and engineering

Giugiaro's body played a trick. It looked like a three-box saloon, which was what conservative Spanish buyers wanted, but the whole tail lifted as a hatchback, giving it the load space of an estate. That combination of respectable appearance and genuine practicality is most of why it sold, and it launched SEAT into the compact saloon class across Europe.

In production

Three more generations followed. The second, from 1998, was effectively a Leon with a boot; the third, in 2004, was a tall and awkward Walter de Silva design that few people warmed to. The name was revived in 2012 on a badge-engineered Skoda Rapid built at Mlada Boleslav, which sold on price and little else, and it was retired in 2019 as SEAT reorganised around the Leon and its SUVs.
