Origins

The VF 8 was the car with which VinFast attempted to become an international manufacturer. A mid-size electric crossover launched in 2022, it replaced the petrol Lux SA2.0 at the top of the domestic range and was the model chosen to open the United States, with the first shipments arriving in California soon after.

Design and engineering

That launch did not go well. Early cars drew unusually harsh reviews from the American press for unfinished software, ride quality and build, and VinFast found itself defending a product that had reached customers before it was ready. The company's response was to rework the cars through over-the-air updates and revised production, and to keep going — a Nasdaq listing followed in 2023, along with plans for a plant in North Carolina.

In production

Whether the strategy works is still an open question, but the VF 8 established the terms: a new manufacturer from a country with no automotive export history, going directly at the most demanding markets rather than growing into them.
