Workhorse's W56 of 2023 returned the Ohio company to its founding competence: the electric step van — a Class 5/6 delivery platform built for the last-mile fleets whose duty cycles suit batteries perfectly, with the parcel giants' route data effectively designing the specification. After the company's bruising pickup detour and USPS contract disappointment, the W56 represented discipline: vocational vehicles, fleet telematics, FedEx-style customers, and certification for the incentives that make commercial EV economics close. Orders built gradually against brutal startup economics sector-wide. The W56's modest profile is its point — in electric commercial vehicles, survival belongs not to the flashiest reveal but to the van that completes its route, every day, for a decade.
