Brand History
The Pontiac Story
Pontiac was created by General Motors in 1926 as a companion make to Oakland, which it soon outsold and replaced entirely. From the late 1950s it was positioned as GM's performance brand, and the 1964 GTO is widely credited with igniting the muscle car era, followed by the Firebird and Trans Am. Models like the Bonneville and Grand Prix kept it a major seller for decades before the brand's distinctiveness faded.
