01

Origins

Avatr began as a joint venture between Changan and NIO, was relaunched with new partners, and reached production in 2022 with an unusual ownership structure: Changan builds the cars in Chongqing, Huawei supplies the cockpit software and the driver-assistance system, and the battery maker CATL supplies the cells and holds a stake.

Design and engineering

The 11 is the result, a large coupé-roofed SUV designed under Nader Faghihzadeh, previously responsible for BMW's 8 Series. The exterior is deliberately spare, with concealed handles and lidar units mounted at the leading edge of the roof; the interior is dominated by a wide display and Huawei's HarmonyOS.

In production

It was offered first as a battery-electric car with a rear motor or two, and later with a petrol range extender, a 1.5-litre turbocharged four used solely as a generator, which is how a large part of the Chinese market has hedged against uneven charging coverage. The 11 was the proof that the three-way partnership could deliver a finished car; the cheaper models that followed were the ones meant to sell in volume.

The facts that define it.
