Origins

Avia's D-series of 2000 renewed the Czech maker's light-truck franchise: a 6-to-12-tonne range descended from the licence-built Renault Saviem designs that had defined the company since the 1960s, now modernised with Cummins power for post-communist markets. Prague-Letňany's aircraft heritage survived in the engineering culture; ownership passed through Daewoo and Indian hands as the D-series soldiered through the 2000s, latterly badged Avia Ashok Leyland. Production wound down and revived fitfully thereafter. The D stands for the Eastern European light truck's transition decade — socialist industrial bones, Western components, and global capital deciding, plant by plant, what survived. Letňany's aircraft came first and lasted longest; the trucks were the interlude that paid the rent between them.
