Origins

MAN entered the 2000s with an ageing heavy line-up. The F2000 was competent but conservative, and Scania, Volvo and Mercedes were pulling ahead on cab comfort and driveline electronics. The TGA, launched for the 2000 model year, was the answer: a clean-sheet heavy tractor and rigid with a new cab family, new electrical architecture and MAN's D20 and D28 series diesels.

Design and engineering

Its significance is partly structural. The TGA introduced the naming convention that still governs MAN's entire range — TG plus a letter for weight and role — and the cab and systems developed for it were reused down the line for the lighter TGL and TGM. That commonality cut development cost across the whole catalogue and is the main reason the company could refresh four vehicle classes in quick succession.

In production

Drivers noticed the flat-floor XXL sleeper and the TipMatic automated gearbox, which took the guesswork out of a twelve-speed box on a hill. The jury of European trade journalists named it International Truck of the Year for 2001. In 2007 the heaviest duties passed to the TGX and TGS, but the TG platform the TGA established has now been running, in updated form, for more than two decades.
