De Tomaso's ambitions were never confined to two-seaters. The Deauville was the company's assault on the luxury saloon market, launched at the 1970 Turin show and built in Modena from 1971: a full-size four-door with a 5,763 cc Ford Cleveland V8 up front, rear-wheel drive, and a choice of ZF five-speed manual or Ford C6 automatic.

Tom Tjaarda styled it at Ghia, and the resemblance to the Jaguar XJ6 has been remarked on ever since — squared-off, restrained and rather handsome, if not obviously Italian. Independent suspension all round and inboard rear brakes echoed Jaguar practice too. It was, on paper, a well-judged car: American torque, Italian assembly, saloon practicality.

It never found buyers. Against Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar, a small Modenese firm could offer neither the dealer network nor the reassurance, and 244 were built across fourteen years. Its platform proved more useful than the car — shortened, it became the Longchamp coupé and, in turn, the Maserati Kyalami after De Tomaso acquired Maserati.
