Origins
Fangchengbao — BYD's off-road marque — launched the Bao 5 in 2023: a boxy ladder-adjacent SUV with the DMO super-hybrid system pairing plug-in range with genuine trail hardware — triple differential locks, disconnecting stabilisers — at prices undercutting the segment's establishment dramatically. It joined the Chinese ultra-off-roader wave beside Yangwang and M-Hero, demonstrating BYD's platform breadth. Brand architecture later evolved — export and consolidation moves aligning the products under Denza's international identity, hence the B5 designation abroad. The Bao 5's contribution stands regardless of badge: proof that electrified off-road capability could ship at volume pricing, forcing a global segment rethink from Shenzhen outward. Toyota spent seventy years building off-road mythology; BYD priced it in eighteen months.
