Origins

The F-Series began in 1948 as Ford's first purpose-designed post-war truck, replacing a line that had been built on car underpinnings. What made it different was the Bonus Built range: a single design scaled across weight classes from the half-ton F-1 up to the heavy F-8, so a farmer, a builder and a haulage firm could all buy from one showroom. The numbering changed to the familiar F-100, F-250 and F-350 in 1953, and the F-150 arrived in the mid-1970s to sidestep emissions rules that applied to lighter trucks.

Design and engineering

The layout has never changed much — front engine, rear- or four-wheel drive, a separate ladder frame — because that is what buyers who tow and haul actually want. What changed was who was buying. From the 1980s onward the pickup shifted from a working vehicle to a personal one, gaining four doors, carpets, leather and eventually the sort of equipment that would not embarrass a luxury saloon, and Ford went with that shift harder than anyone.

In production

The result is a run of commercial dominance without parallel: the best-selling truck in the United States since the late 1970s and the best-selling vehicle of any kind for decades after, generating a share of Ford's total profit large enough that the company's health is often read directly from F-Series numbers.

Legacy

Ford has been willing to take real risks with it. The 2015 model switched to an aluminium-alloy body to cut weight for fuel economy, a change that required rebuilding factories and was widely predicted to fail with conservative buyers. It did not. The Raptor turned the truck into a high-speed desert machine, and the battery-electric F-150 Lightning tested whether the formula survives the powertrain changing entirely. That question is still open. Everything else about the F-Series has been settled for forty years.
