Origins

Ford chose continuity over reinvention. The seventh-generation Mustang reworks the previous car's structure rather than replacing it, which freed the budget for a heavily redesigned interior built around two curved screens and for keeping a naturally aspirated V8 and a manual gearbox in a market that had largely given up on both. Chris Stevens led the exterior, which is sharper and flatter-faced than the car it replaced.

Design and engineering

The timing gave it the field to itself. The Camaro and the Challenger both ended production shortly after it launched, leaving the Mustang as the only pony car still made. The range runs from the 2.3-litre EcoBoost four through the 5.0-litre Coyote V8 in the GT and the track-tuned Dark Horse, with a supercharged 5.2-litre Predator engine at the top.

In production

Above all of them sits the GTD, assembled by Multimatic in Markham, Ontario, with a rear transaxle, pushrod suspension and active aerodynamics: a Mustang built to a specification the nameplate had never attempted. Ordinary S650s continue to come out of Flat Rock.
