Brand History

The Ford Mustang Story

The Ford Mustang debuted in April 1964, launched at the New York World's Fair as an affordable, sporty coupe developed under Ford executive Lee Iacocca. It was an immediate sensation, creating the 'pony car' class and selling over a million units in under two years. Through more than six decades and seven generations, the Mustang has remained in continuous production, spanning everything from economy six-cylinder coupes to high-performance Shelby variants.

The Mustang's emblem has always been a galloping horse in profile, running to the left — a direction sometimes said to symbolize a wild, free-running mustang rather than a racehorse. It has often been paired with a vertical red, white and blue tri-bar, and has been periodically resculpted and simplified over the generations while keeping the same essential pose.
