Origins

When GM separated its full-size SUVs from the Blazer and Jimmy names in the early 1990s, the two-door K5 Jimmy became the Yukon and, more importantly, gained a four-door body. That was the change that mattered. A full-size, body-on-frame SUV with three rows and a pickup's towing capacity turned out to be exactly what American families wanted, and the Yukon and its Chevrolet Tahoe twin have been printing money for GM ever since.

Design and engineering

The extended Yukon XL covers buyers who need more space again, and the Denali trims, with leather, unique grilles and the largest available V8, pushed the model into territory previously held by European luxury SUVs at considerably lower cost.

In production

Later generations brought independent rear suspension, an available diesel straight-six, air suspension and Super Cruise hands-free driving. The formula has not moved: rear- or four-wheel drive, a ladder frame and a large petrol V8, sold to people who genuinely tow and to many more who do not.
