Origins

The Acadia marked a real change in how General Motors built large family vehicles. Launched in 2006 on the Lambda unibody platform shared with the Saturn Outlook, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, it replaced a set of body-on-frame trucks and minivans, among them the Envoy XL, the Safari and the Pontiac Montana SV6, with a single front-drive-based crossover offering three rows and car-like manners.

Design and engineering

It sold well enough to prove the point, and the segment it helped define has since taken over the American market entirely. The 2017 redesign moved it onto a smaller platform, shrinking it into the mid-size class to make room above; buyers complained about the lost space, and the 2024 model grew back to full-size, which says something about how carefully GM had read its own customers the first time.

In production

Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive optional, with AT4 and Denali trims covering the off-road and luxury ends. It remains in production.
