Origins

The Lobo of 2002 gave Hafei unexpected style: a city car whose crisp, cheerful lines came from Pininfarina — the Harbin aviation group hiring Italy's most famous studio in the era's boldest design outsourcing wave — over kei-derived mechanicals suited to China's urban duty. The result was among the first Chinese cars with genuine international design polish, exported modestly and remembered fondly. Turin's involvement signalled the industry's learning strategy: buy the world's best design education by the project. Hafei's independence ended in 2009, but the Lobo's significance survives — an early proof that Chinese entry cars need not look like afterthoughts, and a line item in Pininfarina's ledger that history vindicated. Owners repaid the elegance with affection the sales charts never fully recorded.
