Origins

Hawtai's Shengdafei of 2009 was the first-generation Hyundai Santa Fe continued under Chinese licence: the Ordos and Shandong-based manufacturer — better known for diesel engines and its improbable financial adventures — built the proven SUV for value buyers long after Hyundai's own range had moved on. Diesel options from Hawtai's own works served inland demand; pricing sat far beneath the Korean original's successors. The model anchored the company's passenger business for years, gathering derivatives around it. Hawtai's story — sporadic products, grand announcements, court-documented struggles — makes the Shengdafei its most substantial artefact: a borrowed design, honestly manufactured, outliving most of the strategies announced above it.
