01

Origins

The e6 was never meant to excite anyone. Launched in 2009, it was a five-door compact MPV with a large lithium iron phosphate battery, a plain body and an interior built to be cleaned rather than admired, and BYD aimed it at fleets rather than private buyers.

Design and engineering

That focus turned out to be the point. Shenzhen, BYD's home city and a willing partner in its plans, put e6s into taxi service in large numbers from 2010 and eventually electrified its entire taxi fleet, giving BYD something no other electric car maker had: years of hard, high-mileage, real-world data on how its own battery chemistry aged. LFP cells are less energy-dense than the nickel-based alternatives most rivals used, but they tolerate repeated fast charging and last, which matters far more to a taxi operator than range headlines do.

In production

The e6 was exported in small numbers as a taxi and fleet vehicle to markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, Colombia and the United Kingdom, and remains in production. It is not a car anyone lusts after, but it is where BYD learned that its batteries would survive a decade of abuse.
