Origins

Cab-over light trucks are a shared business in Japan, and this is the clearest example. Launched in 1999 to replace the Hino Ranger 2 and 3, it was engineered alongside Toyota and sold in near-identical form as the Toyota Dyna and ToyoAce. The engine list makes the relationship obvious: Toyota's 1GD-FTV and 4B diesels sit next to the jointly developed N04C and W04D units.

Design and engineering

Bodies cover the ground a working truck needs. Two-door standard and wide cabs handle deliveries, a four-door crew cab carries site teams, and the five-door Route Van serves as a high-roof parcel machine. Transmissions run from five- and six-speed manuals to automatics of both counts.

In production

Production is deliberately spread across the markets it serves, with plants in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Pakistan and Colombia. In North America the same role later passed to the Hino S-Series. It is not a glamorous vehicle, but few are asked to do more work per unit of cost.
