Hino built the Profia as the top of its truck range, the class of vehicle that moves freight between cities rather than around them. It arrived as the Super Dolphin Profia and has been in continuous production since 1981, updated rather than replaced, which is how heavy trucks tend to work: cabs, emissions hardware and drivelines are revised on their own schedules while the basic architecture endures.

Most versions are standard-cab tractors and rigids; Australia is the only market to get a crew cab. Gearboxes come from Hino itself in manual and automated form, with ZF's AS Tronic offered where operators want two pedals. Assembly runs well beyond Japan, with plants in Taiwan, China, Indonesia and Malaysia building it for regional markets, often under the 700 Series name.

Toyota's controlling stake in Hino places this truck at the heavy end of one of the world's largest commercial-vehicle operations. It is a machine far better known to fleet managers than to enthusiasts, which is roughly the point.
