Origins

The MU-X does a straightforward job: take the D-Max ladder frame, turbodiesel and drivetrain, add a wagon body with three rows of seats, and sell it where families need to tow, carry and cross unsealed roads. It replaced the MU-7 in 2013 and, in Indonesia, effectively took over from the Panther.

Design and engineering

That makes it a rival to the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport rather than to any European SUV, and its markets are Thailand, Australia, Southeast Asia and increasingly the Middle East and southern Africa. The second generation, from 2020, brought a stiffer platform, a quieter cabin and a full suite of driver aids while leaving the basic proposition alone — rear- or four-wheel drive, low range available, and a diesel built to run for a very long time.
