Origins

Replacing the CJ in 1986 was a delicate exercise. The YJ Wrangler widened the track, lowered the centre of gravity and borrowed suspension work from the Cherokee to address the handling criticism that had helped end the CJ, while keeping leaf springs, live axles, a folding windscreen and removable doors. It also had rectangular headlights, which a substantial part of the audience has never forgiven.

Design and engineering

The TJ of 1997 put round lamps back and, more importantly, replaced the leaf springs with coils at both ends — a change that lifted axle articulation considerably and made the Wrangler both better off-road and tolerable on it. The Rubicon version of 2003 added locking differentials, a disconnecting front anti-roll bar and a transfer case low enough that Jeep could sell, from the factory, a vehicle capable of the trail it was named after.

In production

The JK of 2007 brought the change that transformed the business: a four-door Unlimited on a stretched wheelbase, which turned the Wrangler from a second vehicle into one a family could run as its only car. It quickly outsold the two-door. The JL of 2018 refined the formula with aluminium panels and modern engines, and added the 4xe plug-in hybrid, now among the better-selling plug-in vehicles in the United States.

Legacy

Through all of it the basic specification has barely moved since 1941: two solid axles, a separate ladder frame, a low-range transfer case, a body you can take apart with hand tools. Almost every rival has gone to independent suspension and unibody construction. The Wrangler's commercial argument is that it has not.
