Origins

American Motors was small, short of money and part-owned by Renault when it decided to replace the enormous SJ Cherokee with something a third lighter. The decision that mattered was to abandon body-on-frame construction: the XJ used a welded unitary structure AMC called UniFrame, with the frame rails integrated into the body, plus a live rear axle and a solid front axle on coil springs and radius arms.

Design and engineering

The result, launched for 1984, weighed roughly a tonne less than what it replaced, was far more efficient, drove like a tall car and still had genuine off-road ability. It was much smaller outside and barely smaller inside. Nothing else was doing this: the Bronco II and the S-10 Blazer were pickup derivatives, and the Ford Explorer was six years away. The compact SUV market as it existed in the 1990s essentially begins here.

In production

The XJ's other great asset arrived in 1987, when Chrysler — which had just bought AMC largely to get Jeep — introduced the 4.0-litre straight-six in place of the earlier GM-sourced V6. Iron-blocked, undramatic and close to unbreakable, it gave the Cherokee a reputation for durability that still keeps rough examples on the road.

Legacy

It was also Jeep's route into China. Beijing Jeep, formed in 1984, was among the first Western manufacturing joint ventures in the country, and XJ derivatives were built there for two decades after American production ended — by BAW as late as 2014.

Chapter 5

Chrysler kept the XJ in production in Toledo until 2001, by which point its dashboard and packaging were plainly of another era and the newer Grand Cherokee was taking the money. The Liberty replaced it and pleased almost nobody who had liked the XJ. Two decades on, clean examples have become collectible, which is not the fate anyone predicted for a cheap 1980s family 4x4.
