Brooks Stevens, an industrial designer better known for domestic appliances and motorcycles, drew a square, glassy station wagon body for Kaiser Jeep at the start of the 1960s. Put on a four-wheel-drive chassis and launched for 1963, it produced something that had not previously existed: a full-size 4x4 a family would willingly use every day.

The engineering was ambitious for a company of Kaiser's means. The Wagoneer launched with an overhead-camshaft six — Jeep's Tornado, among the first mass-produced OHC engines in an American vehicle — and offered an automatic transmission and independent front suspension, neither of which had been available in a four-wheel-drive vehicle before. The independent front end was dropped after a few years as too fragile for the work owners actually gave it; the automatic stayed and defined the model.

What kept it alive for so long was the top of the range. Under American Motors it gained the Quadra-Trac full-time four-wheel-drive system in 1973, then leather, air conditioning, and from the mid-1970s the vinyl woodgrain flanks that made the Grand Wagoneer instantly recognisable in American suburbs and ski towns. By the 1980s it was a genuinely expensive vehicle sold on comfort and status, competing with the Range Rover on price if not on sophistication, and Chrysler kept building it, essentially unchanged, until 1991.

That is twenty-eight years of production for one basic body, among the longest runs in American automotive history, and its influence is out of all proportion to its sales. Every luxury SUV that followed — the Ford Expedition, the Cadillac Escalade, the American reception of the Range Rover itself — works from the premise the Wagoneer established: that four-wheel drive and expensive trim are not a contradiction. Chrysler understood the value of the name well enough to revive it in 2021 for a new full-size Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.
