01

Origins

Kawasaki spent six years developing the GPZ900R, and it shows in how many things changed at once. The engine was the company's first liquid-cooled four-stroke four, with four valves per cylinder and, unusually, the camshaft drive taken from the end of the crankshaft rather than the middle — which let the engine be narrow enough to serve as a stressed member of the frame. That in turn allowed a slimmer, lighter motorcycle than its 900cc capacity implied.

Design and engineering

Launched in 1984, it was the fastest production motorcycle of its day, capable of around 150 mph, and it handled well enough that the speed was usable rather than theoretical. That combination is what the term "sport bike" came to mean, and the GPZ900R is generally treated as the first modern example: a machine designed as an integrated whole rather than as a big engine dropped into whatever chassis was available.

In production

It also introduced the Ninja name, applied initially for the American market and now attached to the whole of Kawasaki's sports range. Two years after launch the model appeared throughout a very successful American film about naval aviators, which did its profile no harm at all.

Legacy

Faster machines came quickly — Kawasaki's own GPZ1000RX in 1986, then the ZX-9R — but the GPZ900R stayed in the Japanese catalogue until 2003, kept there by riders who preferred its proportions and its comparatively relaxed ergonomics to those of the bikes that replaced it.
