Origins

By the mid-1980s Ducati's air-cooled, two-valve V-twins were charming and outclassed. Massimo Bordi's answer, launched in 1987, changed the specification wholesale: the 851 kept the 90-degree V-twin layout and the desmodromic valve actuation that had always defined the company, but added liquid cooling, four valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection. The resulting engine, known as the desmoquattro, was developed with input from Cosworth on the cylinder head design and gave Ducati something it had lacked for years — headroom.

Design and engineering

The timing was exact. World Superbike began in 1988 with regulations that allowed twins twice the capacity of the four-cylinder machines, and the 851 was built to exploit them. Marco Lucchinelli won the championship's very first race at Donington Park, and the works bikes established the pattern that would define the series for the next decade: a big Italian twin, torque out of slow corners, beating the Japanese fours on drive rather than peak power.

In production

Road versions arrived in Strada, Superbike and progressively more focused kit forms, on the trellis frame that would become a Ducati signature. Handling was excellent, build quality was of its era, and the riding position asked something of the owner. Production ran to 1992, when displacement growth in the racing programme pulled the road bike along with it and the 888 took over. The 851 is where modern Ducati starts — the bike that proved the company could engineer as well as it could style.
