By the mid-1990s the 600cc supersport class had become the most fiercely contested corner of motorcycling, and Kawasaki's entry was a sport-tourer at heart. The ZZR600, sold in some markets as the ZX-6E, was fast but heavy and softly sprung, built for covering distance rather than chasing lap times. In 1995 Kawasaki split the line and gave the sharp end its own machine.

The first ZX-6R kept a 599cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline four but wrapped it in a shorter, stiffer aluminium frame with steeper geometry and firmer suspension. It was aimed squarely at Honda's CBR600 and Suzuki's GSX-R600, and when Yamaha's R6 arrived the four-way fight pushed the class forward faster than almost any other segment. Each side pulled weight out, added revs, and returned the following season with something meaner.

Kawasaki's most distinctive move came in 2002, when it enlarged the engine to 636cc. The extra capacity fattened the midrange in a class where riders otherwise had to work the gearbox constantly, and it made the bike noticeably easier to ride quickly on the road. It also put the machine outside the 600cc limit for Supersport racing, so Kawasaki kept a strict 599cc version in production alongside it for homologation. For years the range ran both ways, the 636 as the road rider's choice and the 599 as the racer's.

The ZX-6R has stayed in production ever since, outliving several rivals as the supersport market shrank. Assembly has run in Japan and in Malaysia through Modenas, and the bike remains one of the few 600-class machines still sold new.
