Origins

Massimo Tamburini designed the 916 at Cagiva's research centre in Rimini, and the result is the rare motorcycle discussed as seriously for its shape as for its performance. Nothing on it was decorative for its own sake. The twin exhausts exited under the tail because that was where the mass could be centralised. The single-sided swingarm was there to make wheel changes fast in endurance racing. The narrow nose with its paired headlamps existed because a 90-degree V-twin is a narrow engine and Tamburini refused to widen the bodywork to hide it.

Design and engineering

Underneath was the evolution of Massimo Bordi's desmoquattro: a liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 916cc V-twin with four desmodromically actuated valves per cylinder, hung from a tubular steel trellis frame with adjustable steering geometry. The riding position was uncompromising and the bike demanded to be ridden hard to make sense, but the chassis was among the best of its generation and the engine's delivery suited real roads better than the screaming inline-fours it competed against.

In World Superbike it was ruthless. Carl Fogarty took championships on 916-derived machinery and made the combination a fixture of 1990s racing, exploiting the same capacity allowance for twins that the 851 had opened up. On track and in the showroom, Ducati was suddenly the aspirational choice rather than the eccentric one.

Legacy

Production of the 916 proper ran from 1994 to 1998, after which the same architecture grew into the 996 and then the 998, and Tamburini's bodywork survived largely intact for close to a decade — an unusually long life for a superbike shape. It has since been collected as an object as much as ridden, exhibited as industrial design, and used as the reference point against which later Ducati superbikes are measured, not always favourably. What makes it endure is the coherence. Later bikes are faster, easier and vastly more sophisticated. Very few have the quality the 916 has of appearing to have been designed by one person who was not willing to compromise on anything.
