Origins
The Torres of 2022 arrived at the hinge of its maker's rebirth: styled with deliberate off-road machismo — Jeep-adjacent grille slats, side-hinged tailgate spare — over front-drive-based crossover practicality, it launched as a SsangYong and became the first standard-bearer of KG Mobility's new identity. Korean sales exceeded plans immediately; the battery-electric EVX followed, pointing the renamed company toward electrification with Chinese BYD-supplied cells. The Torres formula — adventure imagery at family-crossover prices — gave KGM a distinct position against the Korean giants' polish. As the first new-era product of Korea's perennial survivor, it carries symbolic weight: proof the fourth carmaker intends a future, not merely an afterlife. Its sales success also bought the company time — the scarcest commodity in its recent history.
