Origins

Through the 1980s Land Rover watched the Mitsubishi Shogun and Isuzu Trooper take the middle of the market, sitting between its own agricultural utility model and the increasingly expensive Range Rover. Project Jay was the answer, and it was done fast and cheaply by reusing the Range Rover Classic's chassis, axles and running gear under an entirely new body. The result reached showrooms in 1989 as a three-door, with a five-door following the next year.

Design and engineering

The packaging was the clever part. A stepped roof gave headroom over the rear seats and made room for the Alpine light windows above the shoulder line, so the cabin felt airy rather than caved-in. The interior was commissioned from the Conran Design Group, which produced something unlike anything else in the class: pale Sonar Blue fabric, a removable holdall in the dashboard, and sunglasses pockets in the roof. It looked designed rather than assembled from the parts bin, even where it wasn't.

2002-2004 Land Rover Discovery Td5 5-door wagon

In production

It sold in numbers Land Rover had not seen from a new model, and it gave the company a mainstream product for the first time. The Discovery 2 of 1998 was a heavy revision of the same idea. The real break came in 2004 with the Discovery 3, which introduced an integrated body-frame structure combining monocoque and ladder-frame principles, independent suspension, and Terrain Response, a system that reconfigured the driveline for sand, mud, rock or snow at the turn of a dial. The Discovery 4 refined it; the fifth generation of 2017 moved to a lighter aluminium monocoque and a softer, more family-oriented shape that divided opinion. The line remains in production.
