Origins

The Freelander was a considerable departure. Every Land Rover before it had a separate chassis, a low-range transfer case and a longitudinal engine. This one had a monocoque body, a transverse engine, permanent four-wheel drive through a viscous coupling, and no low range at all. In its place came Hill Descent Control, which used the ABS to hold the car at a walking pace downhill, a neat piece of software substituting for hardware.

Design and engineering

Rover Group launched it in 1997 with three-door and five-door bodies, the three-door offered with a canvas rear roof section. It undercut the Discovery substantially and found an audience that had never considered a Land Rover before, becoming Europe's best-selling compact 4x4 for several years running. It also inherited the era's weak points: K-series head gaskets and the intermediate reduction drive and viscous coupling were both known failure points, and reliability surveys were unkind.

2002-2003 Land Rover Freelander two-door -- 01-01-2012 rear

In production

Ford took over and the second-generation Freelander of 2006 was a much sounder vehicle on a shared EUCD platform, with a proper six-cylinder option and far better build. From 2010 an eD4 version dropped four-wheel drive entirely for economy, which said something about where the market had gone. Production ended in 2014, and the Discovery Sport took over the slot.
