The C01 arrived in 2022 as Leapmotor's first saloon, a mid-size four-door sharing its engineering approach with the C11 SUV. Like the SUV, it uses cell-to-chassis battery construction, with the cells integrated into the floor structure rather than sitting in a separate pack, which allows a long wheelbase car to keep a low roofline without losing headroom.

Drive is by a rear motor or twin motors for all-wheel drive, both through a single-speed reduction gear. An extended-range version followed, using a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as a generator to feed the battery rather than driving the wheels directly.

Its real argument was price. The C01 is a physically large car sold in China against considerably smaller and cheaper competition, which is only possible because Leapmotor builds most of the expensive parts itself. Whether that undercuts the company as much as the competition is a question its accounts have been answering slowly.
