01

Origins

The C11 is a mid-size SUV, launched in China in 2021 with a rear motor driving the rear wheels or twin motors for all-wheel drive. On paper it competes with cars costing considerably more, and Leapmotor's explanation for the price is vertical integration: the company designs and manufactures its own motors, inverters, control electronics and battery packs rather than buying complete systems from suppliers.

Design and engineering

The most substantial piece of that work is its cell-to-chassis construction, which mounts battery cells directly into the floor structure rather than packaging them in a separate module inside a pack. It saves height and weight and stiffens the body, and Leapmotor was among the first to put it into a mass-market car rather than a flagship.

In production

In 2023 an extended-range version arrived, with a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine acting purely as a generator for the battery. This is a popular configuration in China, where long-distance charging infrastructure is patchier than the cities suggest, and it turned the C11 into the company's best-selling model. It is also one of the cars Stellantis sells in Europe under the Leapmotor badge.
