01

Origins

The L7 is the five-seat member of Li Auto's L-series, launched in 2023 alongside the six-seat L8 and the larger L9. Mechanically the three are close relatives: electric motors front and rear driving all four wheels, a battery that can be charged from the mains, and a turbocharged petrol engine that works only as a generator and never drives the wheels. In the L7 that generator is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder.

Design and engineering

Removing the third row is not a small change in this market, where the six-seat configuration is a major part of the appeal, but it produced a car with a genuinely large boot and more rear legroom, and it found a distinct audience among buyers who wanted the size without the seats.

In production

It sold strongly enough to become one of China's best-selling large SUVs of any kind, petrol or electric, and from 2025 it began appearing in export markets. Chinese production is scheduled to run to 2026, by which point the range will have moved on.
