Mack's strength has always been vocational work: dump trucks, mixers, refuse vehicles, the jobs where durability matters more than fuel economy. On the long-haul highway, where fuel is the largest operating cost and every percentage point of drag counts, it had been losing ground to Freightliner and Peterbilt for years.

The Anthem, launched in 2017 for the 2018 model year, was the answer. It replaced the Pinnacle in over-the-road service with a substantially reworked aerodynamic package: a sloped bonnet, a redesigned roof fairing, tighter chassis fairings and reshaped mirrors, all developed to cut drag rather than to look different. The cab interior was reworked too, on the reasonable basis that recruiting drivers had become as hard as recruiting customers.

Power comes from Mack's own MP7 and MP8 diesel sixes, including a high-efficiency MP8HE version, with a natural-gas option, and most are ordered with the mDRIVE automated manual transmission rather than one of the multi-speed manuals that remain available. Mack has since introduced the Pioneer above it for long-haul work, but the Anthem remains the model that put the brand back into a segment it had nearly conceded.
