Origins
The Gratour ix5 of 2016 entered China's compact MPV surge: seven-seat practicality at commercial-derived prices, aimed at the small-business families for whom one vehicle served shop, school and Sunday. Foton's light-commercial DNA gave it durability credentials; the segment's ferocious value competition set its ceiling. It sold usefully through the MPV boom's plateau as crossovers absorbed family demand. The ix5 documents the workhorse end of China's people-mover market — vehicles bought with calculators rather than configurators — and Foton's methodical presence in every commercial-adjacent niche its dealer network could reach. The calculators did their work; the ix5 passed enough of them to matter locally. In the segment's brutal economics, holding a provincial corner for a full product cycle counted as a paying result.
