Origins

Daniel Mastretta's MXT, launched in 2011 after years of development, was Mexico's first serious indigenous sports car: a bonded-aluminium chassis with composite body, Ford's 2-litre EcoBoost turbo amidships, and 950 kilograms of genuine agility built in Toluca. British television's dismissive jokes before its launch turned Mexican pride into marketing; the finished car's competence — track-tuned, well-engineered, honestly priced — made the rebuttal itself. Small-series production served domestic enthusiasts and cautious exports before the company pivoted toward buses later in the decade. The MXT remains a national milestone: proof that Mexico, the world's manufacturing floor for others' cars, could design and build its own — and take a joke all the way to the bank.
