Origins

Baojun — 'treasured horse' — launched in 2011 with the 630: the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture applying its microvan empire's cost genius to a proper family saloon, engineered with GM platform knowledge and priced beneath the joint-venture establishment for China's vast first-car interior. The formula was precise: global-standard basics, ruthless decontenting where buyers wouldn't notice, dealer coverage where the giants were thin. The 630 sold solidly and established the brand's licence to operate; its successors would turn the approach into phenomenon. As the opening move of what became China's most studied value brand, the 630 deserves its footnote — the moment Detroit's engineering and Liuzhou's frugality formalised their partnership in sedan form. The treasured horse, as the name promised, earned its stable one careful sale at a time.
