Origins
The MAZ-530 of 1957 was Soviet heavy industry flexing in public: a 40-tonne mining dump truck from the Minsk Automobile Plant, displayed at Moscow's VDNKh exhibition grounds where crowds filed past its raised tipper bed as they would a sculpture — the period Kodachrome of exactly that scene now serves as this model's portrait. Its class pointed toward the mining giants that became Belarus's BelAZ speciality once the heavy-dump mission moved to Zhodino's new works. The 530 itself was built in modest numbers, its role as much demonstrative as industrial: proof that the USSR's truck plants could match the world's biggest iron, tipper raised in salute. The exhibition photographs, fittingly, outlived the production run.
