Origins

The MAZ-5335 of 1977 evolved the 500's proven formula: the same rational cab-over configuration with refreshed styling, stronger drivelines and the incremental improvements a planned economy's flagship hauler accumulated between five-year plans. It hauled the late Soviet Union's freight through stagnation, perestroika and collapse, remaining in service — and in provincial production logic — deep into the post-Soviet 1990s, when spare parts mattered more than novelty. Belarus's MAZ works survived the transition around trucks like this before diversifying into buses and modern tractors. The 5335 is the archetype in collective memory: when the former USSR pictures 'a truck', this squared Minsk cab, running in convoy down a birch-lined highway, is usually the image that arrives.
