Origins

William Morris built his first car in 1913 and named it the Oxford after the city where he had been repairing bicycles. The bullnose radiator gave it its nickname and the company its identity, and by buying in components rather than making them Morris undercut his rivals and took the largest share of the British market through the 1920s.

Design and engineering

The name then covered a series of only loosely related cars. After the war the Oxford MO of 1948 shared its body engineering approach with Issigonis's Morris Minor but on a larger scale, and the Series II, III and V that followed carried Morris through the BMC years to 1971, latterly with Pininfarina styling shared out among badge-engineered Austins, Rileys and Wolseleys.

In production

The most consequential chapter happened elsewhere. Hindustan Motors bought the tooling for the Oxford Series III and built it at Uttarpara as the Ambassador from 1957 until 2014. For most of that time it was the default Indian car: taxi, government transport, family saloon. India kept a 1950s Morris in production for well over half a century after Britain had forgotten it.
