Announced in 2022, the Polestar 3 was the model expected to move the brand from interesting to profitable, because the mid-size luxury SUV is where the money is. It is a five-door, dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric car sharing its underlying architecture with the Volvo EX90, styled by Nahum Escobedo and Su-bum Lee under Maximilian Missoni, with a front aperture treated as an aerodynamic device rather than a grille.

Getting it to market took longer than planned. The platform's centralised computing and driver-assistance software ran late across both Volvo and Polestar programmes, and series production did not begin until February 2024, at Chengdu in China. Manufacture was subsequently added at Ridgeville, South Carolina, making the 3 the first Polestar built in the United States, a decision whose value shifted repeatedly with trade policy.
