01

Origins

The first version, in 1985, was barely a new car: a facelifted rear-wheel-drive Stellar with more equipment, sold only in Korea and a couple of nearby markets. It established the name and little else. The real beginning was the second generation of 1988, which switched to front-wheel drive, grew into a proper mid-size saloon, and became the first Hyundai sedan exported seriously into North America.

Design and engineering

The following generations tracked Hyundai's own improvement closely enough to be used as a measure of it. Early cars competed on price and warranty; by the fourth generation the build quality had caught up with the class; and from 2005 the model was built at Montgomery, Alabama, Hyundai's first US assembly plant, which put it on equal terms with the Camry and Accord in the market that mattered most.

The breakthrough was the 2009 car. Its fluidic sculpture styling was dramatically more assertive than anything else in a conservative segment, and it sold heavily on appearance alone, forcing rivals to respond. Later versions added hybrid and turbocharged drivetrains and, latterly, styling risks that have divided opinion. It has only ever been a four-door sedan, in a market steadily abandoning them.
